Source: Steelers not expected to trade for McClaurin
The Steelers reached out to the Commanders about a trade for Terry McLaurin, but are not expected to land the star receiver, a source tells DK Pittsburgh Sports.
McLaurin, 29, has been one of the most consistently productive receivers in the NFL over the past six years, logging five 1,000-yard seasons while being named to two Pro Bowls and was second-team All-Pro in 2024. He's heading into the final year of his contract and wants a new one, but has made no ground with the Commanders. He informed the team this week that he wants to be traded, prompting Omar Khan to reach out.
In reaching out to the Commanders, the Steelers learned that McLaurin not only wants to be paid like a true No. 1 receiver, which is expected, he wants to be a true No. 1 receiver on whatever team he plays on in 2025 and beyond. With the Steelers having DK Metcalf signed to a five-year, $150 million contract, they've committed to him as their No. 1 receiver.
It's still no surprise that Khan picked up the phone and called about McLaurin. The Steelers' general manager has been very aggressive this offseason, landing players such as Metcalf and Jalen Ramsey via trade. And, per sources, the Steelers had no concerns about fitting McLaurin under the salary cap, even with a new contract. Any acquiring team would have to take on an $18.8 million cap hit for McLaurin, and any potential trade and new contract would have likely lowered that figure. After the Steelers traded for Metcalf and signed him to his new contract, his 2025 cap hit was lowered from $18 million to $11 million.
With McLaurin searching for a situation to be the top receiver, the Steelers aren't a fit. The Steelers have been tied to just about any receiver that could be available via trade or in free agency ever since they trade George Pickens to the Cowboys in May. If they do add another receiver, it doesn't appear to be McLaurin.
